I have a 1976 15hp chrsyler.I can't get it to run I have rebuild the carb and fuel pump, tested the coils they read 7.8 ohms on both. It also have new points and condensers.
What it is doing is when i pull start it, it will run but starts missing bad, but does not backfire and then it dies . When I try to restart it, it backfires and won't start.
I did a compreesion check on the top and it reads 120, but cant get to the bottom because of the bottom cowl is in the way . Any ideas Thanks Tracy

Re: 1976 15 hp chrsyler wont run

1. Are you setting your points at .020 using the cam mark at the widest point?

2. Have you cleaned and set points before and noticed an improvement in performance?

3. Do you have a good blue spark at both plugs wires? If so, omit #4.

4. Have you run a continuity check on the point?s contacts to know they have clean contact?

5. Please post close pics inside your Mag sys. Post a pic relating to not getting the 2nd plug out. My 1970 35 HP Chrysler?s Mag is attached.

6. Any more history that might lead to some answers. Last time it ran good, was it stored with fresh treated fuel and how long was it stored.

I did put my points at.020 made sure they were clean. Thanks for the timing help, some one told me to put piston on top dead center then. It runs a little better but i still have miss, and a backfires not as bad it was. Here are some pictuers of the topout board eingine.jpgoutboard 2.jpg

Re: 1976 15 hp chrsyler wont run

1. I have never had a backfire vs sluggish and hesitating since my purchase in 1984.

2. All of my issues have been solved with getting the points clean and adjusted correctly.

3. When you adj at TDC, is the indicator mark on the cam pointing to the points at widest gap?

4. Having a good feel for using the feeler gauge is critical (I use a Go & No Go test).

5. A backfire IMO means timing is probably off. I would double ck points and good fire.

6. Were you able to confirm a good blue spark using a known good plug or spark tester?

7. The spark testers and plug are better due to verifying plugs firing under compression.

8. Were you able to get the 2nd plug out? It could be fouled and part of the problem. Pic
Please! I c/n visualize a plug being hard to get to on a 2?cycle with known filing issues.

9. This was common with autos, not replacing hard to get to plug and eventually a miss.

10. Good long hard runs with fresh fuel treated with StaBil helped after sitting until summer only.

Sorry what i meant to say is I could not do a compression test on that cylinder because of the bottom cowl is in the way. I have to check the timing agian i did not look at The indicator mark . I ll check that out and i will get back to you.

On the 15Hp you set the timing and throttle pickup point this way.
Set the points at 020 att highest point on camloob.
The throttle pick up point is this way.
There is a mark on the timingadvance/throttle cam. The roller that move the throttle butterfly shall touch the cam just before the mark and the butterfly shall start to move just at the cammark. You adjust it with the screew at the throttlelinkage.

Please answer these questions unless the eng is new to you w/o this info. History means a lot!

2. Have you cleaned and set points before and noticed an improvement in performance?

3. Do you have a good blue spark at both plugs?

4. Can you hold the compression in the bottom cyl with your thumb to know it?s not zero?

6. Any more history that might lead to some answers, Such As: The last time it ran good? Was it stored with fresh treated fuel and how long was it stored?
