A simple stator test is to swap the red and red/white wires and the blue blue/white wires on the box if the spark problem stay the same you have a triigger/switch box problem if it changes to the other 2 cyls you have a stator problem. Test the trigger by swapping lead at the switch box to see if the problem moves or not, if it goes with the swapped wire it's the trigger if it don't move it's the box. If you have test equipment we can help with specs.

Re: 1976-1985 mercury classic 50 sparks weak

Thank you for the info. i swapped the blue wire with the red wire and the red/white with the blue/white and none of the cylinders would fire. what does this mean? i also swapped the wire from the trigger to #1 cylinder with the wire to #4 cylinder and nothing changed. so then i took the #4 green wire and moved it down to the #1 spot and then the problem changed to #4 cylinder. do i need a swith box and a trigger or what? please help!

You don't swap colors, just the solid and striped wires of the same color.
