Hello wise motor masters! 'Just picked up a very nice 1976 Johnson 25hp tiller outboard.
I need some advice. There was an electric starter on this engine originally. Alas it's gone now, but the starter switch is still there.
Questions 1. Where is the cylenoid for this starter found on the engine (not sure if it's still there or not)? 2. Would you recommend a new or used starter (i.e considering the cost of rebuilding a used one. They're on ebay frequently - but even though they say they work . . . .Are they basically bullet proof, or are they delicate?)
3. If use, how "year specific" do I need to be regarding the starter and it's bracket (IOW, would a '73 S and B fit my 76 engine?)? 4. What would you go through and/or replace now that it's on the bench to assure a happy boating season (I'm planning a carb rebuild, new impellar, lower unit lube, and plugs to start). I also know that I need a manual soon. Kind regards,
Chris

Re: 1976 25hp electric starter question

Hiya,

my, "new to me" 25 hp is few years older than yours. (1970), but the solenoid is on the starboard (shifter) side of the engine, in front of and lower than the fuel pump.

The starter mounting holes in the block of my motor had been damaged by the previous owner, and the repairs weren't great (some tig welding and new holes drilled/tapped). They changed to a different block sometime in the 70's, so maybe they changed the bracket dimensions too (?). My starter mounts with a bracket on the front port side of the motor. Has 4 bolts. 1 on the front side going into a "finger" on the block, 1 on the port side going into another "finger" on the block, 1 on the port side down low, goes through a tab on the block (I think), and threads into starter bracket, and one from the top that also holds the rope/recoil starter.

Dunno about what a new starter would be worth... if you got a good deal on a used one, I'd guess an auto electric place should be able to rebuild it for you if need be.

I think I posted a list of what I did to my motor in response to an earlier post of yours...
previous thread

I think I forgot to say that I also greased/lubed all fittings. BTW, I bought the factory service manual for mine off ebay for ~$12. Was a good buy.

there's another thread on here where I describe how I fixed my starter mounting problem... Used it all last weekend, still tight! Check the mounting points, maybe that's why someone ditched the starter?

Glad to hear you found a motor! Good luck with it.

Brent
