1976 35 evinrude jumping gears

This motor I just purchased was jumping gears, I have seen this before and a new clutch dog fixed, not this time. So check the prop shaft, and it has movement in and out. Has anyone seen this problem, or know how to fix? thanks

Either the dogs are shot or something in the shift linkage. Pull the lower and check it out.

the clutch dog is new, and the gears are in excellent shape. How can the dogs cause play in the prop shaft?

How does the pinion gear look?
