motor was jumping gears, so I put in a new clutch dog. The old one looked good as did the gears. Motor is still jumping gears in forward and reverse. So I find that the prop shaft has movement in and out. All the thrust washers are in place. I have heard of shimming to tighten movement. Can this be done? what shims, and where would they go? thanks

I have a 1976 40 HP Johnson and the parts breakdown in theri Johnson Shop Manual shows thrust washers on both sides of the gears (forward and reverse) on the prop shaft itself. So maybe yours have worn to the point that you could need new ones... just an idea...
