1976 35hp electric choke problems

My choke solenoid seems to have gotten "weak" after sitting unused for a while. It tries to move the choke, but doesn't seem to have enough force. There is no binding in the linkage, and no corrosion on the hot wire. Is it common for these to go bad? Anybody priced one of these lately? Just wondering how much a new one would set me back. Thanks, Jdman

Yes they do go bad from time to time....your is 30 years old, so you may have gotten your money's worth out of it. As a last ditch effort, you can remove the solenoinoid, clean the outside surface of it with scotch-brite pad (the outside surface where the clamp holds it is the ground) and re-install it, see if that helps. If not, then a new solenoid is in order.I do not know how much one would be, but would guess under $40 U.S.

Also, clean the terminal end that connects to the choke switch at the dash.
