Hi all, I've a 1976 Evinrude, model 35602G. After replacing the plugs and cleaning the carb it started right up but now it seems to be missing. I bought a manual on ebay and was planning on replacing the points and condensor but when I took the flywheel off i became very confused. What the manual said was going to be under the flyweel was a drive coil, points and condensor. The manual also didn't show the, sorry for the ignorance, part on the left back side of the motor highlighted in the second picture link. Can anyone tell me what is going on please?
http://us.f2.yahoofs.com/users/43e17fe0zafda3c07/rudequestion1/__sr_/e362.jpg?pfGGY4DBlVRV1gKk

http://us.f2.yahoofs.com/users/43e1824dz2fe9f6a8/rudequestion2/__sr_/2060.jpg?pf2QY4DB_NTAKfnK

What you are looking at is a CD ignition. The "black box" on the side of the engine is the power pack.

Is this a new engine to you? Look on the block for a large welch plug. The model number on the welch plug should match the model number on the transom bracket tag. If they do not match, post the model number here.

The CD ignition system for the 35's first appeared in 77'.

It is possible that who ever had the engine before you changed the ignition system over to CD.

EDIT: No pictures here either. Just went from the component discription.

Is the welch plug about the size of a quarter if that's it the number is "J35ELCTS E5799810". I think it is a 76' that may have been converted. It has a kill switch that has the cables cut off and lead to nowhere.

Yes, the motor is new to me. Bought along with a 73' Kenner that I get to completely gut and start from stringers up. It's gonna be fun I think. Not sure why the links didn't come up earlier seem to be working ok now.

that's an '83 powerhead, so OBJ is on the money even without seeing it.

The "plug" looks new. It's pretty shiney. Other numbers are as follows: Cylinder head cover: 327673 D2 2 ; Exhaust Cover: 326713 Still trying to figure out how to get pictures on a website, appreciate the patience.

You need to go back to basics. Using a spark tester make sure the spark jumps a 3/8 inch gap with a bright blue snap. If you installed sparkplugs thinking it was a '76, then you may have the wrong plugs. Correct plug for '83 is QL77JC4 gapped at .030.

How did you clean carb? Did you dis-assemble it? Install a new carb kit?

Those look like original coils off the '76 motor too. The newer style coil is black, kinda rectangular and the spark plug lead has a boot on each end. Those older coils get cracks in them and lose their punch. They're not that expensive either. Don't make a lot of sense to replace powerhead and electronics but use old coils.
http://epc.brp.com/default.aspx?brands=ej&lang=E
