1976 6hp fisherman shifting ?

is it normal for my engine to need to be at the right rpm to shift , sometimes its hard to shift in and out of gear? i usually have to finess with it to go into out of gear, i used to own a 9.5 about the same year and it would go in and out of gear with no issues , so do i have a shifting problem with my 6 hp fisherman or is this normal for this hp of an engine
i have it set up on a remote shifter for my kicker set up and its kinda dificult sometimes to get it in and out of gear.

it has to idle down to shift. i believe it has a lock out, if the throttle is too high.

thanks i apreciate the advice , ill keep tinkering with it at a lower idle to see if that works better ,
