I have a 1976 70 hp evinrude. It ran fine for 20 minutes then sputtered and vibrated badly. I was only able to run at low rpm, about 2000. The problem has come and gone, but now seems to be getting worst. Electrical or carbs?

Howdy Blackbelt.

Carb/fuel pump problems rarely come and go, but you can confirm that it is not a fuel pump problem by pumping your primer bulb when the engine is acting up. It it is the fuel pump your engine will pick right up for a few seconds.

If you have water in your tank that can cause your problem. If you don't have a water seperator/filter in line between tank and engine, get one.

Your most likely culprit is the powerpack, but don't do anything about it until you have nade sure that it isn't something in the fuel system.

Good luck. :)

Re: 1976 70hp Evinrude bog down

Thanks for the info. Prior to my last attempted outing I discarded the old gas, cleaned the tank and filled with fresh gas. My problem continued. The power pack was replaced on this engine about three years ago, but i guess it could be bad again. I will get a water seperator also as I do not have one now. Again thanks, and any additional thoughts are appreciated.
