Re: 1976 85hp johnson will not shut off

I was working on a 78 35hp that did the same thing. Crank the motor and then turn the key off. Start wiggling the wire harness. Mine had what looked like a small capacitor mounted on starboard side of engine that had a single black wire coming from it. This wire ran to a connector that was wired to one of the coil packs. Wire was loose in the connector and would slip out .

Use your ohmmeter to test the kill circuit from the red plug at the engine forward.

With the battery disconnected, disconnect the large red plug and connect your ohmeter as shown in the thumbnail (click the thumbnail, please).

Turn the key to on, then off, ohmmeter should show open, then closed.

If it does not, you have either a bad ground connection, a bad ignition switch, or a break in the black wire with the yellow stripe.

I replaced a power pack once with another used one. It would not respond to the key switch to turn off. Kept running instead. I replaced the pack with another used one and it shut off normally.

the two m spot on your switch one comes from your ignition box and the other comes from the ground on battery i bet u left one of the two off when you turn off key the two m spots make contact and ground out motor to turn it off
