Good day to all.

I need to adjust the saftey lock on the motor, it has begun to lift when in reverse and givin a little fuel.

I have a Seloc 1965-89 repair manual but I cannot find anywhere in it that tells me how to adjust the lock.

This is a manual tilt 850 model.

Thanks and have a great day.

Looking at those rusted latches I can't help but think they are not grabbing the trim rod. Maybe you simply need to lube them.

The paint is starting to lift but the latches do move with no restriction so I believe it is more of an adjustment issue than a rust issue. But I thank you for your suggestion.

When the motor is down and in forward/reverse gear the latches do catch the trim rod but not completely enough to enclose the rod.

The rod should latch in neutral and reverse only. That nut near the hooks is the adjustment. There is a cam on the shift rod that forces the reverse lock rod up and down.

After reading your post I had to go out and take a look to check but in order to lift this motor I have to put the Merc controller in full throttle to release the locking fingers.

Is is out of adjustment by that much or is that the way it should be?

Re: 1976 85hp lifting in reverse

Problem solved unless Chris1956 is correct about it only suppose to lock in reverse and neutral

The only way to unlock this motor to lift, is to place the remote to the full throttle position.

If it is right the way it is then the problem is solved.

To do the adjustment was easy;

1-lift motor and lock into place.
2-there is a rod inside the locking fingers tube which has a cotter pin holding it in.
3-unclip one end of the spring
4-push the rod out but remember when putting it back in make sure you have the hole on the right end
5-lift the rod assembly out.
6- turn the assembly to loosen or tighten to achieve the proper setting
7-tighten locking nut and replace the cotter pin and attach spring.

Done

The lock is supposed to be activated by the shift cable. So it should unlatch as soon as you put it in forward, regardless of the throttle position.
