1976 85hp Mercontrol shift adjustment

I need some assistance on how to adjust my shift cable on my 1976 85hp Mercury. The control box is a mercontrol. There's to much free play when I put it in forward, before forward engages, but reverse immediatelyy engages. i need to get it adjusted evenly, but need some tips. Thanks for any nelp.
