Hey guys, just got another boat
It's a 19' Arrow Glass Tigre, with volvo penta aq170 B30 motor and Penta 280 outdrive. Could someone tell me where i can find a manual for such boat/motor. I found some info on the outdrive but not much info on the motor. Has anyone seen service manual for these motors?

I found the workshop manual Volvo Penta Workshop Manual 772364, right one? Will this manual have enough info to service the motor.

Couple of questions for you: What octane gas does bb170c use? I downloaded the brochure and it says min 90octane? Really?
Also do i need special oil in the Penta outdrive? Also where is the fill and drain plug on these things?

Btw, if you haven't noticed this is my first I/O boat. so any info or links would be great.

Regarding the octane, look at the method used for the published value. This will be one of either "RON" or "(R+M)/2" .

In the US the method most published is the (R+M)/2. The Euro method most published is RON.

In the (R+M)/2 method, R=RON and M=MOTOR, both are methods of measuring octane. R+M means the values from those methods is added together, then /2 or divided by 2.

RON stands for Research Only Number and is usually a higher number when compared to the MOTOR method value. MOTOR means they use a calibrated engine and run it in the lab, that number is usually lower than a RON number.

The number published from method R+M/2 is the average of the 2 methods.

For a rough comparison, 87 (R+M)/2 is about 91 RON, so 87 "here in the states" is most likely the minimum octane needed by your engine.

At the top of the Volvo forum you will see a topic named "MUST HAVE Technical Information for DIYers". THAT is your new best friend....;)

Thanks Maclin, good octane info and sticky. I'm in CO so the lowest gas is 85, not a good idea to go cheap right?

Thanks for the link Don, got the manual. :D
30w is not too heavy for this bogger? spec calls for 10-40, somewhat close to 30w.
Also, do these motors like additives? Like lucas oil stabalizer? Good idea?

Thanks guys for the quick reply!!

Use 10W40, it doesn't matter. Volvo had a service bulletin in the early 90's that changed it to 30W, but the latest bulletin went back to "Engine Oil". Just change it yearly, and the bellows every 2-3 years and you will be good to go. You won't like what happens if the bellows fails and you get water into the primary shaft bearings ............... Unless you like pulling engines.

Just stick with the 87, thats what I run in mine. ;)
Additives, potents, and mechanics in a bottle are a waste of cash. Just regular 30 or 40 weight detergent oil is all you engine needs.
