I'm considering the purchase of a 1976 25H.P 'Rude. Are there any know problems for this year, any service bulletins or common fixes. The asking price is $650.00USD does that sound viable for the Great Lakes area.

The 25 HP Rudes were and are a very reliable engine. As for the Great Lakes, I would'nt even recommend it! Meant for small Lakes and fishing! Don't get in over your head! Price sounds about right, too. What type Boat are you going to use it with?

RIck- I plan to use the Evinrude 25 to upgrade my duck hunting boat, 16ft alluminum. Curently I run a 9.9 Sportwin, in saginaw bay, in Novemeber. Just hold on baby!

hey songdog, the price is alright, although tell him 500, You always ask too much so people can talk you down.
A Rude is always a good choice.
And as Rick said, it will depend on what boat you are putting it on. The great lakes are powerful y'know.
Happy boating...

As songdog said, offer 500.00 and work from there! That should work fine on your 16'er. Just wanted to be sure you were not going to tackle the "GREAT LAKES", in a Johnboat, with a 25 HP! Have fun with the new Motor, it should give you lots of dependable service! Good Luck and stay away from that "Open Water".

Re: 1976 Evinrude 25 History

songdog - My thoughts are 650.00 is way too high. More like 250/300 is the range! I will say that the 1976 25 hp Junnyrude does have some parts that are not interchangeable with other years, and its the only year that that happens. For some reason that year some enginer desided to change thread pitch on nuts bolts at will. Made the starter bracket different than any other. You can get parts for it but just know that they might not fit.You have to also remember that this is a 26 year old engine no matter what was done to and when.
I think you should do some more shopping unless the area where you live only has 1 boat for a hundred miles. I can go to the local flea market tomorrow here in NJ and see 6 motors all running from 3 hp thru 25 hp from 20.00 thru 200.00 usually all in the late 80's to low 90's for years. But then theres 1 or 2 boats in every other drive way!
steve
