Hello all,
I am working on my 1976 55hp Evinrude 2 cylinder outboard. Chasing down a no spark condition. When I purchased it the previous owner had a hacked harness on it and it was not sparking. It was then tested with a short test harness and found to have excellent spark.
Fast forward to now as the boat is ready to hit the water. The no spark condition is back. I checked the logical things first with the help of the CDI troubleshooting guide. First I tried the test harness and had no spark. Took off the black/yellow kill wire and disconnected the rectifier as directed. Still nothing. I then performed the timer base test on the power pack by intermittently tapping 1.5 volts to the timer base terminals on the power pack. This is supposed to test whether that side of the pack is able to get a signal from the timer base. These wires are Black/White and White/Black. I did not get any spark while doing this. I followed the instructions to the tee, just not explaining it all that well. All resistance test values for the timer base itself and the other specified areas are within spec.
This would lead me to believe that the power pack has given up the ghost. It was not properly installed, being that the lower bolt that also holds down the ground strap was missing. Could this blow the pack? Am I safe to think that the power pack has failed? Working on a tight budget here and I am not into just switching out parts at random. I tested this to the best of my ability. Now I turn to the fine people here. Are there any other suggestions or tests that you can recommend before I order this pack? Sorry for the long post, just wanted to cover all my bases. Thank you very much for the help and have an excellent evening.
