I have removed all components from the Armature Plate, (see photo) but it won't budge when I try to lift it off. Followed instructions from Clymer Shop Manual for removal. it says to remove retainer screws but did not identify where they are, however I can't see anything else that could be holding it in place, yet it is very solidly affixed. Tried gently rapping on it front and back- did not budge or loosen at all. Nothing behind it seems to be attached to the motor or anything else. I don't want to risk breaking it. Does anyone have experience with this motor? Is there something I am overlooking? Tried unsuccessfully to upload a great photo of armature. Iboats had "unknown error" message 3x.

You have to loosen 4 screws !------Two of them also hold down the coils and 2 of them are beside the points.--------Then it all lifts off.---------Big hammers are not required here !

Would you mind if I send the photo of the Armature plate to you so you could see it and post it on this thread? If so you can send a PM to me, please let me know how to get the photo to you.
Thanks.

Sorry, I do not need any pictures of what you have !---Just loosen those 4 screws and it will practically fall apart !

I understand Racerone, your response is very much appreciated.
After using a work-around I managed to upload my photo.
I removed All the components on the armature (coils, points, condensers- everything, stripped it clean including every single screw) It changed nothing... still will not even wiggle. Does anyone else have any suggestions as to what I can do now?

it's likely seized on the block from dried up grease. Spray some penetrating oil around the point cam and rotate the plate "back and forth" while pulling upward.

Update: still plugging away at the issue. I've been applying Liquid Wrench to the top area around the shaft base where it contacts the armature plate, seeing if it will give at all. Will keep at it....

Took 2 of those 6 hp blocks apart today for winter rebuilds--Just 4 screws and the armature plate lifted off easily on both of them !

not sure I've run into that either. Couple of thoughts or options:

1. not sure what would fit, but might try a length of 2x or 1x as a pry bar in back between the plate and the head. Tap the end of the wood with a rubber mallet to loosen. Proceed carefully of course, although those plates are available (maybe not real readily available, at any particular time or place -- but available).

2. Just leave it in place, unless you need to replace the plug wires (or have another reason to get under there). Can check the wires for continuity, and just reuse them if in decent shape. Know there is a lot of discussion about replacement, and all for doing that. But it might be easier in your case to just leave things in place.

I looked at the pic, and see what might be some black sealant peeking up from under there. PO might have thought something like that was appropriate, but has made for some issues. Other than that, not sure what would be holding it so securely.

Update:
I have successfully removed the armature plate. What I did was make a puller using some scrap 2x4 and $1.07 in hardware from Ace. (see photo) I did it slowly so it took 2 days. Looks like there was just old grease beneath it which was holding it in, I guess; that and a really tight fit.
Now I can proceed with dismantling the power head to see what other surprises are in store.
I want to thank everyone of you who responded with suggestions, I tried all of them.
Oct 24 note: I did find corrosion beneath the old grease.
