I've got a 1976 115 Evinrude on the back of my Predictor right now. I've cleaned the motor up pretty good and it sure sounds mean when I crank it up, however I'd really like to check the vernatherm just to ensure proper cooling. Normally I'd be able to access the housing relatively easily on this model motor, but it seems the old guy that had it before me tried to boost the HP by adding the bubble back exhaust cover that was on the 140s from that year. This bubble back cover makes it nearly impossible for me to get to the thermostat housing.

Does anyone know if I could just take that bubble back off to get to the vernatherm, or would I need to take the whole powerhead off? From what I hear these 115s can boost up a good bit with larger carbs and this exhaust cover. Any input?

Thanks,

I can't remember--can you access it by removing the skirt below the shroud pan?

Kinda. It's a pain due to the bubblebutt, but taking off the lower cover does help.

I had taken the lower cover off in the past and the therm housing wouldn't fit through. It wouldn't be safe to remove the bubble exhaust cover? Seems like i could access the therm much easier if it had the flat back.

If you're lucky and none of the exhaust housing bolts are frozen, removing the exhaust will help. If they are frozen, get ready for a bunch of broken bolts. And there are LOTS of bolts. I'm rebuilding a freshwater 140 right now and I broke only one bolt on one of the cylinder head waterjacket covers. That one bolt is so badly frozen I'll have to drill it.

Even on the flatback motors, getting a wrench on the outer thermostat housing bolts is no fun, but at least you have a better shot at it from the top.
