1976 evinrude wont shut off unless choked

Motor runs good but cant shut off from key I have to choke it to get it to stop. wiring to KEY SWITCH GOING CLOCKWISE FROM TOP IS RED TO B, BLUE TO M , WHITE TO S,PURPLE IS A THATS HOOKS TO CHOKE,BLUE WITH WHITE STRIPEGOES TO M. Which wires can i touch together to see if it is the switch. ANY help would be great.

Just looked at 55 johnson and it was larger black wire broke off in motor connector that has 2 yellow ing.coils with it and jumpered around it . It grounded out ing. to shut off switch was good .

You didn't post the model number, the colors don't sound right, but I don't know the model. Usually you short the two M terminals togeather to kill the engine.
