iam trying to put a water pump kit in 76 johnson 40 hp i got silver plate and 2 .do i put a gasket on both sides of plate ,water pump was stripped down when i received it ,thanks

Maybe this will help you out, don't see a gasket used anywhere. What is your model number?

thanks.no numbers on motor ,i can put water hose on goutment it stays cool,hook it up with new impeller it wont pump water

Are you running the engine on a hose, barrel or in the water?

Not to sound dumb, but did the key slip out of place? No key=no turning impeller. I have had various 70's era outboards, and have not seen a gasket on the pump floor.

tried all 3. key is good, it doesn,t want yo pump water

Could the impeller hub be bad? Those systems are not complicated. If the driveshaft is turning, the impeller is turning. If the water tube is not blocked, water should be moving.
