1976 Johnson 55 hp shift shaft?

What's the trick to get the shift shaft disconnected from the lower? is there any tricks to reassembling it? I'm doing the water pump on it.

the connector is under the bottom carb, it will probably be easier for a beginner to remove bottom carb and starter. then you can see the connector. you have to remove the thru bolt that comes in from the port side thru the shift rod. it can be a pita. do not turn the shift rod while the unit is off, you will throw the linkage off.
