1976 Johnson 85HP for junk

We have a working 85HP motor. Plan to scrap it. Local marina [on a small lake in Illinois] says he doesn't know of anyone who would want it for parts. So we'll scrap it for aluminum. Assuming the scrap dealer won't buy aluminum with steel mixed in. My question is: if we cut off the lower end with steel gears, where else will we find steel that needs to be removed? --Thanks

Crankshaft , connecting rods., cylinder sleeves , bearings , wrist pins and many linkages are NOT aluminum.-----Those are an excellent motor.----Easy to repair.------Put it on Craiglist for a quick sale.-----Why is this motor considered scrap ?

Even small amounts of steel such as nuts and bolts makes it "irony aluminum" and devalues it. But it still has scrap value, just not as much.

I have taken many parts to a local scrap dealer.-----They did not object to the odd broken bolt , cylinder sleeve.----Said as long as it appeared to be 98 % aluminum they paid for " clean aluminum ".----Perhaps the quantity I brought affected the price too.

I agree with racerone. I think you will get more on Craigslist than you would for scrap. You can even get more if you part it out and sell just individual parts on Craigslsit. Some parts are not available any longer to guys that really need them for the older motors and will pay big bucks to keep their motors going. Look at the price for just the cowling on the thing!

Power trim / tilt system is worth nearly what you are asking.-----This will be a " quick sale " in my opinion.
