I am lloking for a source for a 15 HP carb to put on my 9.9 to up the power. How much is a used 15 hp carb worth? Has anyone tried installing a different kind (motorcycle or ?) of carb with good results. I understand the linkage is totally different, but there has to be a better way than paying way more for a 15 hp carb than they are really worth.

I just purchased a 1998 8 Hp Evenrude for $150 that runs very good and strong, from a relative who owns a rental fleet. The only down side is the motor was camoed painted. I would like to know the paint code for the proper dark blue color. Also, the ID tag alond with all of the other decals were removed for the camo paint. Are the ID numbers affixed anywhere else on this motor like the core plug on my 1976 9.9? I only know its a 1998 motor because the MFG date of October 17, 1997 is printed on the pull start drum.

Thanks for the help

Hi fast LC4,

Getting a 9.9 Johnny up to 15 needs more than a carb swap. It's not the linkage that is the problem.

Depending where the engine was made, it may also need a change to the exhaust tube in the lower unit, and possible different reeds. While you're doing all that, you may as well strip it and give it a rebuild. And in my experience, depending on the boat, the extra power doesn't amount to much in the way of increased performance. Tuning the boat/engine setup will probably do more for you.

If you're dead set on 15hp, the best way to do it is to sell your Johnny and buy a 15 instead.
