I have a 1976 Johnson 15 hp #15R76A.
What is the correct fuel mixture?
What is best type of oil to use in it?
What plug should be used the champion or ngk and what is the proper gap?
What is the fuel pump part number and does iboats sell one for it?

Can you please answer these questions for me?

Thanks, J

50:1 is the mix
full synthetic if you can get it in your area
Champion UL81C gapped to .030, iboats sells but shows no stock.
Fuel pump Part # 18-7350, sold here

The only deal about the pump, Sierra lists the pump for an 81+, looking at an 81 pump they look identical to the 76 accept for the fuel tube size. To be exact you can order an OMC pump 0386979 or get a rebuild kit for the one you have.

Thanks so much for the info.

Can you tell me what's the part number for a rebuild kit for my fuel pump?

The sierra pump looks proper, just the carb fitting is pointing in a different direction. I don't know if the inlet position can be changed on the sierra pump, maybe Ezeke knows.

I have a different perspective, that's one of the motors i've rebuilt and run. I've seen the insides of several, scored cylinders and pitted crank journals. My advice is to run Evinrude, Mercury, Yamaha, or Castrol TCW-3 at 50:1 less than 6000 RPM, 25:1 above 6000. Don't use cheap oil. That's also the advice of the OMC engineer who built the motors. Champion L77JC4 at .040" is the right plug, for higher RPM the replacement nr. for the older Champion L2-G is better, runs cooler. Don't try to rebuild that fuel pump, you'll have a high chance of failing. You can get a new pump for $40 or less (Sierra, or Ebay).

The L77JC4 and QL77JC4 have never been listed for the 1976 15HP and 9.9HP motors, but have for the 1977 and later 9.9 and 15. There has to be a reason, so be careful.

'77 and later are CD ignition, '74-'76 are breaker point ignition and use different plugs.

Champion L77JC4 at .040" is the right plug, for (Sierra, or Ebay).

Wrong plug for that year motor, look up the plug chart. Like KBAIT said, breaker ignition, suspect that`s why the diff.
