I just bought a 1976 Johnson Seahorse 135hp with all the controls. 2 problems.....

1. When I push the tilt/trim switch button down I can hear the tilt/trim motor wind and hummmm but the motor won't move.

2. When I push the tilt/trim switch button up all I hear is the relay click. The motor won't wind and hummmm at all.

What could be the problem? I just filled it with fluid by the way.

There is a fluid fill screw on the side of the reservoir. If you unscrew that fill screw, the fluid should be level with the bottom of the screw hole. Once you fill it, put the screw back in and move the trim through the up and down motion a few times. The system will self bleed. Check the filll status and refil if needed, then rebleed. Continue till the level stays at the full. On that model, the up voltage flows from the trim switch on the dash (or in the control box handle) through a solenoid (like a starter solenoid) usually at the back of the boat under the deck. The down voltage only flows through the trim switch (no solenoid.) If you get no down motor, could be that the switch contacts on half of the switch is bad. Replacing the switch may be an easy fix.

Actually I get trim motor movement and sound when I push the switch down. When I push the switch up to try and raise my outboard all I get is a click sound from the solenoid.. What would the problem be???

Very possible the contacts are corroded inside the solenoid casing and they are not making solid contact to transfer current. They do go bad with age. You may need to change it out.

Pretty difficult to clean the contacts inside a sealed solenoid....

You could also have a bad trim mtr. That was a three wire system.

See your Bombardier dealer. 581528, still the original part number. About $25.

on the old ones, sometimes the motor will turn but the connection with the pump is broken. And they can be really hard to get to, to replace.

before you spend a ton of $ on parts you might not use, disect the relays, its worth the time . You can verifiy and know that either the contacts are stuck or broken . The relays change the polarity .

The relays were not used on the older 3 wire trim motors. That system uses a single solenoid for the up only. The dual relays came out when they went to the two wire trim motor in 1982.

~~~~UPDATE~~~~~
I just received the replacement solenoid that I bought from iBoats.com. I threw away the old one and installed the new one. After making sure the tilt/trim motor was topped off with oil I tried the up and down on the switch.....and.....IT WORKS PERFECTLY. I now have both up and down motion.
Thank you to everyone who helped me and gave me advice. It was much appreciated.
