Need a little assistance. When engaged lever to forward, I feel the tension and the shift lever on motor goes to forward. HOWEVER when I pull back to neutral to reverse, I feel the tension release and break away. Thus not engaging into reverse. Any suggestions?

Is the motor running ?------Do you have an assistant turning the prop while trying to shift ?----------Control should not be operated with motor shaft in a static condition.---Take that to the bank.

Shifting to forward you are pulling the cable, shifting out of forward or into reverse you are pushing the cable. Racer is correct about having either prop shaft, or the crankshaft turning when trying to shift gears.
BTW, what engine is it you're trying to shift?

Thanks guys. I took apart the control and found a crack in the plastic piece that attaches cable. Installed new plastic sleeve and she shifts great.
