Has anyone used synthetic oil in their older mercs. I heard that they smoke less with the synthetic. But the question still remains will it hurt the older merc motors as in my vintage? 1976.

No it won't hurt the engine and yes it smokes a little less, is it worth the cost ????

Thank you for the quick response. With that good info at least I wont be afraid to try it to see just how much difference it really makes vs the cost.

Jet, I have used a synthetic-blend in my '77 Merc 1500. it smoked a bit less than regular dino oil, but the smoke was not as sticky. Consequently, I smelled less like smoke, as well.

Pennzoil full synthetic would be pretty hard to beat in any stock 2 cycle engine. Probably wouldn't allow a rebuild job to break in, but once an engine is at peak compression, it'll keep it there much longer than dino oils.
