I got this boat and did put it in the water only because it needed water pump work that I found when running on the muffs. So I replaced the impeller and all is well with the water issue. Now I dont know if this problem that I am having now was caused by the impeller replacement or not. I took the boat out today for a shake down cruise. But right away no reverse. The prop appears to be spinning but will not power the boat backwards when power is added. I also noticed the when comming back from fwd thrust to neutral, when in the neutral it sound like it is not totally disengaged. When I pull the throttle back slightly past neutral the noise stops. When at the reverse detent prop spins in reverse but as power is added it makes a slight grinding noise like it is not engaged all the way and will not move the boat faster when adding power.
So now the question: Is this a cable rig issue or do I need to pull the lower unit back off? Is there any quick visuals that can be checked before I tear into the throttle rig or lower unit?

shift shaft not lined up correctly. drop lower, put both control and lower unit in neutral, reinstall.

Re: 1976 merc 1500

I did this job before I received my merc shop manual. At least now I have something to follow and be able to look at the cartoons. I guess thats what I get for not using the manual. Is there a chance that I messed up the shift shaft???
Thanks for the help.
