A guy here at work has a 1976 Merc 20hp that was his fathers. It has been sitting on a boat and trailer for around 6 years. Ran fine last time it was used before his father passed. He is offering to sell it to me for maybe a couple hundred bucks. Is this motor worth the money? I had a 15hp Gamefisher I am trying to get rid of as parts are extremely hard to find. Also, the Merc has controls, but I want to use a tiller. Are these convertible? Thanks.

When it was new it was easily converted, still is if you can find the parts or a doner engine

I found a good number of tillers for it on ebay along with the bracket to mount it to the housing. Is that all the parts needed?

Re: 1976 Merc 20 hp

I just sold a 1977 model. VERY strong motor, and was a dream to operate. I would definitly consider buying the motor. Things to check before committing, is the motor locked up, does the motor have spark, and what is the condition of the wires (they are prone to deteriation).

Not sure on switching from remote steer to tiller, but those parts associated with the electric start are hard to come by! So take care of it.

cwhite, use the red search function at the top of this page. search "awakening a sleeping outboard" it was written for johnson/evinrude, but is pertinent to mercury. very good info. before you blow it up.
