I just got a 76 model Mercury 175 from my grandfather because the johnson 175 blew a cylinder #3 piston. The motor is in great shape, and hasn't been used much at all. The only thing is the power trim motor/resivoir is mounted on the inside of the boat, so im told, and i don't have that. i have the lower mounting bolts for the motor mount to bolt to the transom, and they are hollow, with threaded fittings on them. i need to figure out what i need that goes on the inside of the boat for the trim/tilt. Im clueless about mercurys, and i wanna get this motor up and going asap. Someone have any clue as to what all i need? please help:confused:

The mounting bolts to hold the motor to the transom...when you say motor, do you mean the trim pump motor or the entire engine....the tilt and trim hydraulic assembly has nothing to do with the mounting bolts that fasten the engine to the transom...

The lower bolts that go through the hull have smaller threads on each end, where a oil line screws into it. its different, made me kinda think at first, but i was told the trim motor is on the inside of the boat. idk anything about mercury motors, thats the problem :(

I've not seen a set-up like that...I don't know whats going on there with those transom bolts, but again...the Mercury trim systems in that era did not use the transom bolts as a means for the tilt and trim hydraulic lines to fasten to...the system consists of a pump (reservoir and pump motor all in one assembly), 4 hydraulic lines that goes from the bottom of the pump and up through the splash well (held in place there by whats known as the "cober inlet")...then the lines go over the top of the transom and through the slots in the top of the Ram brackets and fasten to the top of the Rams...

Humm, 'fraid they did...........

Easiest fix is to find a later model trim pump with tha two lines and use tha two bolts as "couplings" and use standard mounting bolts in tha motor to transom..............or put it all in tha boat and drag it ta a local Hyd. hose shop so they can make it all fit without tha "couplings".............

Yeah Dukedog...I've never seen that set-up....it sounded a lot like a mercruiser outdrive set-up to me...Great Job! I never mind being corrected...had second thoughts on leaving that reply because it sounded so much like the mercruiser..

Thank both of ya'll for the help and thoughts on it. Its a weird setup. I'll look into finding a pump for it, but if not i guess I could always see about getting one off a newer one. Im just wanting to hook it up like it originally was ya know. Whats the actuall part name that i'll need to look up to make sure im getting the correct part, and if you might know, how much roughly would one cost? Im guessing they're probably expensive

Yeah, MM. They did both in tha early years. Don't remember which came first.

David. Its gonna be a real chore ta find a vintage pump with hose's that arn't a POS so be real carefull when your lookin'. Pay close attention to tha fitting end (clyinder) of tha hose's. Tha pump end is actually part of tha pump and will not screw out. They are a little different on tha later model.............

yep. i was looking around on ebay and found one, but i've read there were different styles. does all the wires from that wiring harness that come to the back (i think there is a blue one, red one, black one, two yellow ones, one yellow with a black stripe) do those go to the power trim pump? or do they actually hook up to the motor on the side?

Everything should go to tha pump/solinoids. There may be a trim/trailer limit switch on tha clamp bracket............Its been way to long ta remember for sure.
