Take a bottle of white-out to mark the prop shaft, and mark the ball gear. thenyou would have to supply 12V to one of the clutch coils, turn the ball gear, and see how many turns of the ball gear make 1 full turn of the prop shaft. That's the overall ratio of the drive.
Compare your drive and the craigslist drive.
This process will also let you know if the clutches engage in the drive.
The craigslist drive is high profile.
Gear ratios are only different in the upper gearcase.
All 1976 Lower units are the same ratio, so for $100 you can't go too far wrong for a spare lower half, if it functions and the oil is not all watery.
Turn the little trucourse steering gear and see if it steers the same way as yours. There were LH and RH worm gears. Easy swap to get the right direction, but good to know before you hit the lake.
