I need the outdrive for my 1976 OMC inline 6 cyl GM in my 76 24' Crestliner. I found an outdrive about 90 minutes from my home. But the owner does not know much about it. How can I tell if it is for a 6 cyl. He is not able to fine any numbers on it. This is the location on craigslist.

I don't know how you would tell from, just looking at the exterior, if the ID tag is missing. The tag should be rivited on the right side of the upper gearcase, just below the tilt trunion.

Also you want to make sure it is the same profile as you have. There were High and Low Profile drives.

Take a bottle of white-out to mark the prop shaft, and mark the ball gear. thenyou would have to supply 12V to one of the clutch coils, turn the ball gear, and see how many turns of the ball gear make 1 full turn of the prop shaft. That's the overall ratio of the drive.
Compare your drive and the craigslist drive.
This process will also let you know if the clutches engage in the drive.
The craigslist drive is high profile.

Gear ratios are only different in the upper gearcase.
All 1976 Lower units are the same ratio, so for $100 you can't go too far wrong for a spare lower half, if it functions and the oil is not all watery.

Turn the little trucourse steering gear and see if it steers the same way as yours. There were LH and RH worm gears. Easy swap to get the right direction, but good to know before you hit the lake.

Super information everyone. Thank you. As it was stated, can't go wrong on this thing for 100 bucks.

The seller did provide this info: number on the drive: 383127 210 HP. Does that provide any clue?

Not sure of the gear ratios between an inline six and a V-8, but that one would be for a V-8.
