Hi, I have a 76 evinrude 25hp. I was wondering if I put a carb off a 35HP if it will gain any power? Any other cheap ways to bump up the power? Thanks

Re: 1976 Rude 25hp MORE POWER

Hi InTawd,
I believe the '76 25hp is based on the venerable 22-cube powerhead, in which case there's not much you can do to it other than to make sure you're getting all 25 ponies as it is. Adding a 35hp carb will only make it run like crap. The 35hp is a 31.8 cube powerhead, so there is no comparison between them. You can make sure the timing is set as per the book, that the carb and advance linkages aren't so sloppy as to reduce full throttle, that compression is good (100psi or better) and even (no more than 5% variance), and that your prop is the correct one for your hull and load conditions.
Some later 25s are based on the 31.8 powerhead, but they are somewhat limited as well, as the lower units aren't the same between the 25 and 35, and the 25 unit is somewhat restrictive for the exhaust scavenging, so there's no easy bolt-on power for that one, either.
- Scott

Nope. That engine is pretty well maxed out as built. The only thing you can really do is make sure it's in proper tune and that it reaches the higher end of it's WOT RPM range.
EDIT: Looks to me like he has the 22.0CID block. Pardon the post collision!
