1976 yamaha 55AE

hi guys i have a 1976 yamaha 55ae outboard 663-L-30807, we have dropped the bottom leg to replace the impeller, but it took some tapping to drop it enough to get the old impeller off, but now we cant get it back up, it seems the shaft is locating but cant get the gear linkage to engage, any ides !
