How do you un-hook the shaft from the engine to the lower unit when changing the water pump on a 115hp Evinrude

The connection is under the bottom carb. It's quicker to just pull the carbs (maybe clean them at the same time).

speaking of changing OMC waterpumps...

how do you get the water pump housing, w/o-ring, over the impeller? As you turn the shaft clockwise and lower the housing down over the impeller the impeller grabs the o-ring and twist it out of position?

Dear ledgefinder, thank you. Do you have to pull the carbs? This is a '77 motor and it looks to me that the shaft comes up into the shifting leavers.
Hi lorax, unfortunately I have not got to the point of the problem you have described, maybe someone will help us out.

guppies, I'm not an authority like these other guys but I have been into an old ('79 V4) recently.
On my motor the shaft goes up through the mid section and connects to the shift linkage with a screw. The screw is 7/16 (I think) hex head with a slot for a screw driver. It's located at the center, front of the motor below the carbs. I found it was most accessable when I turned the motor to the left and tilted it all the way up. I did not remove the carbs although that does make it easier.

Put the impeller into the housing first, then put the housing onto the driveshaft.

You don't HAVE to pull the carbs, just easier.

Guppies, I think your motor has a shift linkage that sandwiches the shift rod. If so loosen the big bolt where the shift linkage pivots and spread the 2 pieces of the linkage. That should release the shift rod.

Lorax, the o-ring goes under the impellor.

It would be money well spent to get an OMC shop manual.
