Well started to pull this motor down, I am wondering if anyone knows the trick to removing the cranckshaft cover? After pulling the whole front of the motor off including all of the reed blocks and bolts, the cover seems to be loose but will not pop. Do I have to remove the lower unit or the lower cowling for this? My sealock manual shows how to take apart the power head but dose not show you how to pop it from the assembly itself. Everything is off from the linkage, flywheel and everything below. I even got those 3 wonderful rusty bolts located under the lower cowling next to the steering arm. I double checked and I do not see where I missed any bolts.

So sorry if I confused anyone with this, just trying to remove a piston and have to remove that cover to do so and from the looks of the manual the only way to do this is with the powerhead completely seperated from the rest of the motor.

Once again thank you for looking and reading my long dragged out post.

I feel sorry for you because looking at the schematic, there is a LOT going on there!!! I really have NO clue what is causing your troubles but I thought I would throw out my 2 cents...

Is there BY ANY CHANCE, a couple "pins" that are lining the cover to the block? Perhaps they are a little "rusty" or have paint on them where they come thru the alignment holes and maybe that is what is stopping it from seperating.

Do you maybe have to pull off the lower unit so the "splines" from the drive shaft come out of the crankshaft? I know that the tops of the splines will sometimes get "gummed up" when you change a water pump and you really have to force them apart. Maybe if the splines are holding the block to the cowling, and there is something with the crank cover that needs to block to come off before it can be removed...?

Either way, best of luck!

Thank you for the info. I found the pins and got those out of the way. I did some research on the board here and to pull off that cover I need to remove the powerhead. Thank you for the diagram, I need to see if I am missing something or not and that would be a big help. Also I seen other posts and they said you dont need to drop the lower unit for this but for only 5 bolts I just might, I already pulled over 100 just on the powerhead!
