The last time I took the boat out it took on water because the bilge pump was not working. It is a bowrider and it took on water in rear were the gas tank is. I always seem to have a problem starting this boat with too much or too little fuel, and was wondering would water cause any other problem? The tank seems to be sealed well where no water could get in.

Try it with fresh gas in a portable tank.
Beyond that you need to do the health check on your motor. May reveal other issues.

Thanks Ken, I will try that and see. I have a problem with starting this motor at times. What is your starting procedure for your 140? I am thinking serious about going foreign 4stroke if I can't lick this starting problem. Any other 140 Johnson starting problems out there?

Mine starts first time every time with the correct starting procedure. I am often a half mile away by the time some of the others have fired up !!!

Re: 1977 140hp won't start

I take the boat out at least twice a month, sometime a Friday and Saturday back to back. Once I read the post about starting it was a help and seemed to work thanks guys for the much needed info. Please listen to this. I took the boat in today for the starting problem and found something INTERESTING! The guys put a spark tester on all 4 cyl. and it was not firing on all only 1,2 and sometime 3 cyl. Took plugs out and not much difference. They then disconnected the ignition cable/harness from the key side and had GREAT spark. The said sometimes the key or something on that side is bad. Has anyone heard of this. Any info please.
