On a 1977 150 HP Johnson, is it possible to remove the trim and tilt assembly without removing the entire motor from the boat? I have a manual that seems to be telling me it won't come out in the usual way (from the front of the motor). Anyone have experience with this? I'm trying to get started on this soon......and if I don't need a hoist I will be very happy.

That model has the type transom brackets that prevent having the PTT unit being pullled straight back and out.

Tilt engine and support thoroughly it so that it cannot fall.

Remove the top pin from the center tilt tube.

Unbolt the port (left) transom bracket and slide it aside somewhat. Make sure that the engine cannot drop or move sideways!

You can now unbolt the rest of the PTT assy and remove it.
