Hi I'm new here trying to get info on this 2.5 153 120 hp Mercruiser that I'm having rebuilt, are they reliable, I like the old Galaxy runabout boat, this one is a open bow with a mercruiser out drive, its paired with a ss 19p prop, my wife and I like cruising and fishing, this will be a lake boat only, the boat is in very good condition are these good boats???

Not sure about the boat but if it's that old in good shape it has stood the test of time, just check close for rot in the floor, stringers and transom.

As far as the motor and drive goes they don't get much more reliable than the GM inline 4 industrial motors such as the 2.5L and 3.0L. Of course you'll want to ensure it has had proper routine maintenance, same for the drive

There was a Galaxy dealer about a mile from my shop who sold them for over 30 years. I worked on plenty of them under warranty and beyond because the dealer would give the customer the run around. If your boat was garage kept you should be in good shape. They did not weather well with stringer/transom, seats falling apart with out side storage.
The 120 is a smooth running engine and should give good service. Make sure that the rebuilder replaces the lower distributor bushing in the block. Replace the points/condenser with a Petronics electronic kit. While the engine is out remove the gas tank and clean it out if it is mounted next to the engine and replace the fuel fill, vent and fuel line to the engine. It may not have a spin on Mercruiser fuel filter so add one.
Also a good time to check the transom and have the drive looked over. If this has been a fresh water boat all the better. Good luck
