Hi there,

I've picked up a 20 hp Johnson and I'd like to fix it up a bit. Unfortunately, when I look at parts online (including iboats) they never seem to have any listings for this year and hp. Can anyone help me with this? I think I heard somewhere that it is the same engine as the 25 hp of that year but with a different carb. Does anyone know if that is so? Most sites do have parts listings for 1977 25 hp Johnsons.

Not even the official BRP parts website (shop2.evinrude.com) shows a '77 20 HP. Can you get the full model number off the engine, that might shed some light on what's going on?

Hi,

Thanks for your quick response - I've had to write under a different username as I couldn't seem to login with my original one - what's up with that?

Anyway - sorry I'm new to this - I should have included the model number - it's 20BA77S - interestingly (I guess lol) it has the ac lighting output.

Odd about it being missing from the parts listings, isn't it?

The 20 was sold in Canada from 1975-on (with an a/c power plug!); in the U.S. they went away for a few years. That is perhaps the reason you can't bring up a parts list for a 1977 20 on a U.S. site. I am not sure, but I wonder if the "B" in your serial # means that your motor is from Belgium?

Interesting that they stopped supplying them to the states for those years. Do you think I'd have better luck on Canadian sites. If so, are there any you could recommend? I'm getting a little desperate lol.

I don't think the B in the model # does stand for Belgium (I can't remember the code for that but there is one) - I think the BA indicates that odd AC Lighting socket - I wonder if anyone has a found a good use for it - I imagine trying to convert it to a dc 'battery charger' of some sort would be cost prohibitive.

That came during the years of changes. I would say you need to determine whether it is the 22 cubic inch powerhead, or the 31.8 cubic inch one. Also. does it have the thru prop hub exhaust or not? Those details will go a long way in deciding what would be a comparable motor.

EDIT: post a couple pictures showing the whole motor, both sides, with the hood off and we can answer the questions I just asked.

Hi,

Thanks for the links - they're interesting but ... nothing that helps me locate parts. The last one has potential but when I click on the link and go to that page - I'm kinda stuck there if you know what I mean ... there's no link on the page to the manual that contains the info ... nor is there an 'add to cart' button or anything like that. Could you possibly tell how to get to that page that would 'leave a trail' as to what manual its from - sorry if I'm missing something obvious!

Still waiting for a friend to drop over the camera.

R.
