I just found out that the lower unit on my 77 evinrude 35hp long shaft has a cracked lower unit. Does anyone know if a 78 or 79 lower unit will work? I am leaving in two months for Canada and the only one I can find is a 78. Thanks.

As far as I recall it is the same up until 1981 then there was a change in the water pick-up and water pump.

In a worse case scenario has anyone uses in weld or jb weld aluminum to temporarily fix a cracked lower unit?

Any pictures of the crack ?--------Should be lots of those lower units around.---------Was there water in the unit that froze ?---------JB weld is good stuff but not if you have major damage and an oil soaked gearcase.

I'm thinking water freezing, not sure. I will take a picture Monday. It is inside my work building.
