I want to mount one of these motors on my 14' pontoon but before I spend the time and money,I would like to know which motor is best or has the least issues and is more reliable, and also the weight difference. The 35 hp looks lighter but by how much ? and whats the VRO stand for Virus Ridden Outboard?

I own both motors and would like to rebuild the carbs and do a plug and fluid change on the best fit for my pontoon first
any and all feedback is appreciated. Thanks:)

Re: 1977 35hp vs 1986 40hp VRO

the 35 is much simpler. and at least 50 pounds lighter. (maybe more if the 40 has power trim). the VRO is oil injection, which the 35 doesn't have. the 40 also has dual carbs, the 35 just one.the 40 will be substantially more powerful, as that block could put out over 50hp, and has more cubic inches. the 35 is really a 30 (it got rerated in 86). unless you hve to go as fast as possible, the 35 is probably a better match for a small pontoon - especially because of the weight.

50lbs is a lot more weight , I was thinking we could do a bit of tubeing with the 40hp,not real fast but quick enough for the kids. What are the known issues with the VRO if any. Thanks

i would not worry so much with the weight , you could offset the weight by installing the battery in the front of the boat . like you said pulling a tuber , the extra power would be nice. i do not know alot about the vro , but i can say the 35 is a little workhorse, so its a toss up to me.
