1977 55hp johnson doesnt fire sometimes

I have been having this problem for a while. when it doesn't fire, I disconnect the yellow wire from the rectifier and it fires up. I then shut down the motor and rehook the wire and it is fine. Any ideas why it would do this? Do I need the yellow wire hooked up? or can I run with it off?

all the johnson guys out there and no ideas? is it a bad rectifier or does this just stumping everyone?
