everything worked fine til I had shop drop lower unit to replace seals. wnen I got it back shift controls tight & jam.seems shift lever on motor doesnt travel far enough to clear cogs in control.could he have something out of adjustment in lower unit? im scared to take it back fearing he might screw it up worse.

Only thing I can think of is your mechanic screwed up the shift rod height when he replaced the seals. If you can do it yourself get a manual and drop the lower unit and screw the shift rod in or out to get it to specified height.
Another thought. He may hane put it back together with the goose neck bend at the top of the shift rod turned around backwards. It that event do the same as I recommended above.

That's my guess.

having just done this on my 86 3 cyl Johnson 60, my manual says to only screw in the end of the shift rod into the lower unit 4 turns. It can go a lot farther, but that might upset... what Walker says

Every shift rod has a certain height it needs to be set at....not just turns in or out. h_lankford, yours needs to be set at 21 23/32" +/- 1/32", with the shift rod in neutral.

Triparacing needs to be set the same.....close as I can remember.
