Hello all, long time reader first time poster.

I have a 1977 Johnson 70 hp seahorse and its mint condition and runs like a top, the question i have and it is probably easy to answer. I change the oil in the crank case all the time to insure the cleanest oil at all times, I know theres nothing wrong with that and the only problem is the cost to do this, but i love this motor and dont ever want it to die. Does any one else do this? or am i a lil over cautious, or what is recomended? once a year?(season)

i was taught by my grandfather that if you keep fresh oil at all times she'll love ya forever! so far so good...

Im just "fishin" for some common ground.....

Thanks.

I'm assuming you mean the gearcase oil, since there is no crankcase reservoir in a 2-stroke.

I change mine once or twice a season depending on use. Change as often as you want, but make sure you're using new washers on the drain/fill plugs every time. You'll get water-intrusion otherwise, and your over-zealous changes will actually cause more harm than good.

I change mine twice a year and check it once in a while by loosening the drain screw and let a drop or 2 come out just to make sure there is no water.

Changing it too often can't hurt anything but it isn't necessary, twice a year is plenty.
