1977 70hp Evinrude problem.

I purchased a boat a couple of years ago that has been a bit of a project. About a month ago I bought a 77 70hp Evinrude from marine mechanic that I was told had been comp tested, new head gasket fitted, carbs rekitted, new water pump and fully serviced. It comes with a 90 day warranty.

So yesterday we had a magnificent day here and we took it out for its maiden voyage, hoping to catch a couple of fish but more just for a test run. I had a mate who is a very experinced boater come along to show me the ropes.

Wouldn't idle properly in the water and kept stalling, hard to start and just had no guts. Most revs we got was about 2500 with the throttle flat out. So I rang the guy from the water and did a few checks, plug leads, throttle opening properly, tank vents open ect. But nothing seemed wrong so we went back in and I have taken it back to the mechanic.

Any thoughts or ideas? Have I missed something stupid?

cheers

Re: 1977 70hp Evinrude problem.

sounds like you got some trash in the carbs.... or water in the fuel

are you using any kind of filter?.......... if you dont already have one i would suggest getting a water/fuel separator for sure.

sounds like a sweet deal with a warranty and all.

depending on when they did all the work it may have had some fuel left behind in the carbs that dried and left behind the oil....... which will stop up your carb.

Re: 1977 70hp Evinrude problem.

When I picked it up it seemed to be running great. It hasn't been started till yesterday so it sat for about a month while I had a few niggly things to finish on the boat. Started it on the hose before we left and then at the water. It seemed to run fine until in the water. It would idle and rev with the prop trimed all the way out of the water but as soon as it was lowered down with the load of the water it would just bog down.

you didnt by chance set the idle while it was on the muffs did you?

it does sound strange.... especially if the mech was willing to give you a warranty.

Just a couple of guesses. Mechanic did not set idle in the water, therefore idle set too low. Crimp in the rubber fuel line from fuel tank to motor.

My portable fuel tanks stow under the splashwell where there is zero clearance between the top of the tank and the splashwell. They are a bit of a pain to get in or out. I had the rubber fuel line crimp between the tank and the splash well. It presented similar symptoms to what you describe.

All fixed, turned out to be one dodgy coil so it was only running on 2 cyl.
