Hi, I have a 1977 70hp Johnson had some problems last season and Im afraid it could be major. After running great for two season it started having some problems. I had in the past had a wire for the number one spark plug come loose and what I encountered this time resembled running on two cylinders. What I found was rust inside the top cylinder and Im seized. It seems like I blew a head gasket but Im not too educated on outboards so I dont know where to start. I already got a new engine and this one owes me nothing (considering what I paid and what I got out of it!) so im not too concerned if its seen its day, but if its a possible rebuild and learning experience im ready to learn, but where do I start??? Or would selling it or parting it out and being done be easier??? PS, If there is anyone who is local to me (South Jersey, Philadelphia) who is interested in parts, whole, or get together to rebuild it, feel free to messege me. All help and advice greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Buy a manual, tear it down and overhaul it. If memory serves correctly, these are pretty decent outboards.
If you already have replaced it then the overhaul can take as long as it takes. If you have the room the Mrs. doesn't mind, there is no hurry. Buy the parts when you can.
Make it a learning experience and when you are done you will have a like new back-up motor or sell it or put it on another boat of the same vintage and be the talk of the lake.
Just my thoughts.
Best of luck.

Not difficult to do if you have the manual and some mechanical expertise. However it will cost you around $1200 in parts, machining and materials. Some special tools will be needed such as piston ring compressor, 12 point socket, 5/16 I think, torque wrenches, bore gauge and sealants. If the crank shaft is damaged then more money for replacement. Lots of stuff involved to do the job properly. You are not fixing a lawn mower. This is a precision piece of machinery.
