I'm new to the world of out board motors and just bought a 77 Monark bass boat with a 85 hp Evinrude motor. Previous owner said the motor is hard starting , that it had to be choked good but once started it usually runs fine and restarts ok. Any known issues for this boat or motor, or reasons why the hard stating might be an issue, also couldn't see water stream on this motor when it was running in the water. Impeller need replacing ???

That year engine doenst have a "pee hole".

Most of the water comes out of the prop exhaust and the cavitation area.

Those old crossflows are hard to cold start if the choke plates are not closing tight.....and I mean tight.

Remove the air silencer and observe the choke function. Make sure they are closing real tight. Hold the plates with your finger while trying to cold start and if it kicks over, you know the choke need adjusting.

Thanks for the info, i'll try what you suggest next time i'm up at the boat to see if that solves the problem. Should i have the impeller changed in the motor not knowing how long ago it was done, or just have it inspected for wear and tear ? Hope your fish didn;'t get away from you, ... if he did then I owe you a fish fry lol .

If the engine is new to you and you do not know the maintenance history, just replace the impeller. It's cheap. You don't want to have a problem/overheat with an engine that is new to you.
