I hope someone has advice! Just bought this boat. Don't have any idea of history. Heres what has happened since I got it. Stay with me! Kinda long (sorry)

After sitting for maybe 9 months or a year engine fired right up with full warm up lever and choke. I shut it down and put on the muffs for water and started it back up. Runs great (it seems) with the warm up lever half to full. Kinda sounds like its missing, its a little sputtery. When you push the warm up lever all the way down it dies. It will run all day at half to full on warm up lever. So... I decide to put it on the water...scary moment!

Got it off the trailer and hopped in. Boat WILL not start. Finally I remeber something I read on here and trimmed the motor all the way up (it was all the way down) fired right up. Lowered the motor and it dies except after it warms just a little then it will stay running with about half way on the warm up lever.

Drove the boat around the lake for about 5 hours...It did ok but was very sluggish. When throttled all the way maybe we were going 15 or 20 mph if that. At about half throttle its seems normal but you can give it all shes got and not do much more than that.

What I've done, in order...

-Emptied and removed gas tank flushed w/water and dried in sun.

-Replaced fuel lines that were real bad off, you could plug one end and blow right through the holes in them.

-Changed plugs. Plugs that were in it... Champion LC77JC4...Replaced with same.

-Unscrewed little plug on each side of carb. inside that was a little jet or something. Kinda clogged. Blew out and replaced.

-Pulled plug wires off one at a time. Spark jumps about 3/4" from removed wire to block on each plug.

-Pulled plugs...Plugs are really wet (with gas/oil mix) after running for a long time.

Sorry for the long post, hope someone can help!

Sounds like it could be a carb issue. I would rebuild them. When it sat for ther 9 months to a year, did it have fuel in it? Whether it had fuel in it or not, I would still do the rebuild on the carbs.

Yep, rebuild the carbs.

And, now that you've run the motor w/o any water replace the impeller too. Even a couple of seconds can toast it. Since you don't know the history of the motor you needed to do it anyway.

Supposedly the engine has been rebulit. Would that include the carbs? If so he said there was only approx. 5 hours on rebulit motor. Lots of fuel drips out of the corner of the air intake when it dies. There are new gaskets on and around the carbs seems like they would have been rebuilt as well.

I appreciate your advice, thanks!

oh yea... I didn't run it with it in gear w/out water just started it and then turned it off. That would burn up an impeller?

Turning a dry impeller for 5 seconds can be disaterous, doesn't matter if it was in gear or not. Having fuel in it is not good. As the fuel evaporates it leaves a scum. I would almost bet my pay check that there is the problem, notice I said almost.

I'd bet his paycheck that it's the problem.

Any time a motor sits w/ unstabilized fuel it can gum up carbs - even freshly rebuilt ones.

Thanks for the advice.

How do I rebuild the carbs? Using a repair manual perhaps? Where is the best place to find a rebuild kit? Price and Quality? I want to make sure it is worth spending the time and money on the boat.

Thanks.

rebuilding the carbs is not hard, just a little time consuming first time ,you should totally dissassemble them, remove evey screw, the jets too, then get some carb solution at your local N.A.P.A. store or the like and soak the carb parts, minus any rubber parts, after a good soaking , 1-2 hrs, you can dunk them in some soapy hot water ,then take a can of spray carb cleaner and clean al parts insuring to blow through every little passage, you can buy rebuild kits through iboats,be sure all fuel lines and fuel pump, filters etc are clean of water and dirt,re-install
