I just aquired one of these with good spark and compression. I am soaking the carb so I can rebuild it. My question is, I see it has cooling fins and a water pump. Do the cooling fins keep it cool if the water pump fails or does it need both systems to cool it? I also see where I can hook up a fuel line from an external gas tank. Is the little fuel pump built into the carb strong enough to draw fuel from an external tank with primer bulb? Thanks alot.

I believe the head is air cooled, but the leg is water cooled. So you indeed DO need the impeller.

Ok, thanks. Does anybody know about the fuel pump and running an external tank?

Yes,the fuel pump is strong enough to run an external tank,IF,the pump is good.I have to turn the petcock on the engine mounted tank to off before using an external tank.

I was going to run from the external fitting right to the carb. My tank is rusted out. It should work that way, right? I was just going to put a inline filter on it.

Your impeller does a lot more than cool the leg, it actually cools the bottom half of the cylinder and the lower main bearing and sinks heat from the whole bottom side of the engine through the mounting plate design.
One of the nuance's of the Tecumseh based Eska is that they made subtle but important changes to the engine design over the years one of which was to the 640 series of blocks (which you have) to cool the bottom of the cylinder by casting in a water jacket, previous models such as the 639, IE the 7hp series block had no such casting and water cooling was directed to the main bearing and circulated through the heat sink to remove heat from around the exaust port but never touched the cylinder. Running your engine with out water cooling will in short order ruin the lower crank seal, main bearing and cause the piston to scuff and melt away on its bottom side.

You can get the impeller here ay Iboats using this sierra no. 18-3054 or ebay and most any merc dealer, you can use a needle bearing of the correct size for a new key or you can buy impeller and key pin from a ebay seller.
Be careful when first using the external tank male fitting on the little outboard, it needs to be flushed with gas because all of the junk and rust ends up there when there not used.

Also heres a lesson I learned from Eskaman2008 of ebay fame and one of our Yahoo group members, make sure you put your remote tank at the level it will be in your boat when you test run from a remote tank or you will get a lean condition and poor to no idle, also consider your fuel line length and diameter as the little Eska bladder pump is weak and will have a hard time pulling the fuel. I recommend a new bladder and keep a spare handy.

Great info, thanks alot. You think I should pull the powerhead and clean out the water jackets? I have a complete carb kit with fuel pump comming and also a new impeller and drive pin. I see two holes on the leg is this where it pees?

not unless you have had a impeller disintegrate, I have a 1977 7.5 Eska model no 14037b and I usally take it apart at the lower colume gasket part no. 26619...there about $2 through certified parts corp and I keep several and find this is the easiest spot to remove my power head to service the clutch and remove or replace the lower metal coweling.

Well, rebuilt carb, replaced impeller and lubed everything thing up, also replaced the spark plug. Second pull she roared to life. I only ran it for a second, its dark here and did not want to **** the neighbors off. Can someone tell me where the tell tell is for the impeller? Guess it only pumps water when the clutch is engaged huh?

yep it only pumps when the clutch is engaged, the tell tale is the two holes on the leg...water should mist to a light spray from those holes
