My 15 hp Evinrude long shaft, runs fine, runs cool, pumps water from pee tube good. But the mid section fills with water and takes days to drain out completely. Not sure where all the water is sitting but it is up high in the mid section and does not want to drain out. I noticed while running it water is pushing out a lot where the shift rod goes thru the grommet below the power head. Could the water tube not be pushed into the water pump housing? But why would it pee good if this was the case? Why is it filling with water?

I believe that water coming out that shift rod grommet is common when running. After you shut it off, the water should drain out a 1/8" hole in the front/side of the 'gear bulge' in the lower unit. Make sure that this drain is clear..

Thanks, Ive never seen a mid section fill up with water like this though - all drain holes are clear yet it does not drain out. If I blow air in the hole you mention water shoots out the pee tube until most of the water in the mid section is gone. After that if I tip the motor up a half a gallon of water comes out of the upper exhaust holes. I'm afraid this water is going to reach the cylinders.

well 90% of the water exiting the engine after cooling leaves through the leg....not through the pee hole. My guess is that you have some sort of blockage in there....maybe a bug or mouse nest.... might be worth the time to drop the lower unit and look into things more carefully... the water and the exhaust should both be leaving through your propeller hub... if the exhaust is leaving through the hub....then i am totally confused as to why your lower would fill up. i have attached a link to diagrams of your engine (or at least i think i got right model) maybe looking at the diagram you could come up with the answer.

There is a cavity in the mid section that drains out through it's own drain hole as kbait points out. I had the same problem with mine and had to drill the crud out.

Never heard of this one before but I'd say drop the lower unit and inspect it very good. Either some drain holes are clogged or there's something in the exhaust hsg.

okay here is what I found. First: the thermostat was stuck closed and as you know on these old 9.9s you have to pull the power head to get at it. Second: the rubber grommet at the top end of the water tube was cracked causing water to go in part of the leg that did not drain. Three: the cooling passage ways were some what clogged with salt. Its all back together now cooling and pumping well and the water drains out of the leg properly.
