I've recently got my hands on an evinrude 15hp. I've done my normal checks and service, gears case lube, seals, impellar kit, carb kit, thermostat etc. And it runs perfectly. Starts first pull and idles perfectly. This is more of a precaution question. The tell tale pumps water very strong even at idle, however its always cold as it should be due to its placement at the start of the water flow circuit. However there is only water coming out of the exhaust ports when ran at a higher rpm for some time, is this normal for the thermostat to only open at higher rpm? With small evinrude johnson I've had, warm water is pumped out after a couple of minutes of running, with this engine Ive let it idle for 30 mins in a barrel and only the tell tale has pumped out water and the exhaust hasn't? Any information would be helpful thanks

thermostats open at a given temperature. high rpms generated more heat but the temperature is the driving factor. if the tell tale and any accessible water stays cool then most of the hotter water goes out via the exhaust housing down to the gc. just check your thermostat to make certain it not stuck open and if the engine does not overheat ...don't worry about it.

Sounds normal....remember those are just exhaust relief holes, most of your exhaust is going through the prop.

There is probably no thermostat installed. Many people take them out, and you'd never know it until you open it up. You need your thermostat. A cold engine will idle poorly, blacken the spark plugs, develop a power loss, and cause a sludge to ooze out of the exhaust after you're done running it.

ive replaced the thermostat, it pumps water perfectly but just not warm water through the exhaust ports
